This is a photograph of Margaret Graham with various relatives in a Chicago area park in the summer of 1933.

Written on the back of the Print:

1933-34
Grandma, Aunt Dee, Emily, Blank, Aunt Maggie

As this print was given to me by Charlotte Leonhardt, daughter-in-law of Muriel Leonhardt, the handwriting in blue ink on the back of the print given the relationships used, suggests it was written by a child of Charlotte. In particular the use of Grandma, Aunt Dee, and Aunt Maggie (actually great-aunt, but commonly said as aunt).

Who’s Who

Left to Right: Muriel Leonhardt, Dolores Woodbury, Emily, Unknown, and Margaret Graham

Muriel and Margaret were daughters of William and Isabella Knowles. Dolores Woodbury was the daughter of Muriel and Robert Woodbury, Muriel’s 1st husband. Emily aka Emilie was the wife of Edward A. Jordan, son of Margaret Jordan.

The woman to the right of Margaret Graham is unknown. She appears to be older than either Muriel or Margaret.

At first I assumed, this photo was taken in the Los Angeles area given that is where Margaret lived in those years. But as I stared at the park, with the long grass and the trees with low full crowns, it had the look of being a Chicago area park. This makes some sense as it was known that Margaret and her husband Bob came traveled to Chicago for the 1933 World’s Fair and that is where the pictured relatives lived. It also made sense in that if the photo was taken in the Los Angeles area, Muriel, Dolores and Emily would have had to travel to Los Angeles from Chicago. Probably the location was near where Muriel lived at the time and perhaps a weekend or the 4th of July, 1933 if a large family outing.

For the three photos during during Bob and Margaret Grahams’s World’s Fair visit, the exact months and days are unknown. The Fair opened May 27, 1933 and continued until Oct 31, 1934. I’ve assumed they came in the summer of 1933 and most likely late June and early July as temperatures would have been more pleasant than later in July or August. The 1933 World’s Fair was located at Northerly Island near the Shedd Aquarium.

Assuming the summer of 1933, Margaret would have been 55, Dolores 22, Emily 31 and Muriel 47 which seems about right for how they look in the photo.

The Leonhardt family this photo to Dave Jordan in the late 1980s. Muriel Leonhardt is Margaret's sister.
